Great boots - very comfortable. These are the same Navy "Boondockers" I was issued when I went to boot camp so many years ago. The Navy contracted with a different manufacturer following the Gulf War and began issuing a different type of "ventilated" boot (didn't like those at ALL). I've been looking for the Boondockers since my retirement in 1995.I stumbled across these on Amazon while searching for a good pair of work boots, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.I was uncomfortable buying boots online, since I couldn't try them on, so I went to a local shoe store to have my foot measured. I ordered the specified size and width from Amazon, but when they arrived just two days later, the boots were way too big for me. I called customer service and spoke with Vanessa. I told her the whole story, about going to the shoe store to get an accurate measurement, yada, yada yada. She recommended that I return, rather than exchange them in order to avoid paying a restocking fee. She then helped me to reorder my boots in the correct size, and emailed me a prepaid shipping label for the pair I was returning. That was late Friday afternoon. I sent the return package on the following Monday, and my new boots, in the correct size, were delivered to my door in perfect condition on Tuesday morning so, Thanks, Vanessa, for your patience and hard work in helping me to fix a mistake that was clearly and entirely my fault!Okay, enough said about Amazon's stellar customer service; now let me say a few words about the extraordinary quality of my beloved Boondockers:When I tried on the replacement pair, they fit like a glove (no pun intended). And I mean these boots were COMFORTABLE right out of the box! They're very well-made, too; 100% leather uppers, double reinforced stitching with a layered rubber sole (so you can have them resoled when they eventually wear out), and a one-inch solid rubber heel.I had planned to meet Chuck Surack, the owner of Sweetwater Sound in Fort Wayne for dinner on Tuesday evening, and I decided to wear my new boots. Nothing fancy - I wore blue jeans and a nice shirt with a blue blazer and no tie. I spent about an hour throwing a military spit-shine on my new boots, polishing the toes and heels to a mirror finish with Kiwi shoe polish, just as I had done so many times in my youth. Once they're shined up, they make excellent dress shoes, and I would not hesitate to wear them even with a suit and tie. After our meeting at the restaurant, Chuck and I parted ways, but I still had errands to run. By the time I got home it was nearly midnight, so I had been wearing a BRAND NEW pair of boots for nearly eight hours by then. When I took them off that night, my feet didn't hurt a bit! Now, in all fairness I should point out that I always buy new insoles and heel supports for any new footwear I buy, especially for new boots, and I followed the same protocol for this pair. However, there's usually a certain amount of painful pinching at the break (where your toes bend as you're walking), and a certain amount of chafing around the bones of the ankle or on the back of the heel. I experienced NONE of that with these boots! They were comfortable all night long, as though they were already "broken in" when I received them (and yes - they are brand new boots).I would not have bothered writing such a long-winded review but, for all of you who have taken the time to read this far, you should know that I've received NO COMPENSATION, NO FREE PRODUCTS AND NO INCENTIVE WHATSOEVER to write this extensive review. I paid FULL PRICE for these boots out of my own pocket and, believe me, they're a bargain! The only caveat I would mention is this: MAKE SURE YOU ORDER THE CORRECT SIZE AND WIDTH! If you order these boots and they pinch your feet, then they're just too narrow. I wear a 14-(W) in athletic shoes, but my new boots are 13-(4E) so, do yourself a favor, save yourself some frustration and have your feet (especially the width) properly measured BEFORE ordering these boots. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, and I hope this very wordy review helped you in your decision.I ordered the wrong width size when I ordered these boots. I had meant to order 9.5 M not 9.5 4E. Realizing my mistake the next day I tried to cancel the order but Amazon said the order could not be cancelled because the boots were already being prepared for shipment. When the boots arrived a few days later I tried them on anyway and was surprised to find that they were not too wide. Since the boots seemed alright I wore them outside and found that they are fine, not too wide at all. The boots seem to be very well made and look good, almost dressy, but not too much so. My only complaint is minor. The shoe laces were too long and kept coming untied. I bought a shorter replacement pair of shoe laces at the drug store that promised the shoe laces would stay tied. I just wore the boots with the new shoe laces today and, as promised, the shoe laces stayed tied all day. And it was nice to not have overly long shoe laces as well. Also, I replaced the removable EVA footbeds with my own inserts so I can’t say anything about the ones that came with the boots except to confirm that they are removable as stated in the ad which is one of the reasons why I bought the boots.Given as a gift; recipient's report: These boots are a textbook example, as so many of today's products are, of Almost There. Basically decent leather, but a bit stiff; heel and sole are acceptable because they flexed, but the material was one part plastic-like and two parts rubber -- a bit hard but not intolerable. The insole provides minimum but not lavish support, and the arch support is virtually missing. The topline is minimally covered with felt and consequently, the back of the boot rubs up against and irritates the back of the foot. Breaking in required. If the leather was softer, the topline less stiff and more protective, the heel and sole less rigid, and most importantly if the 4E was truly wide enough to be a 4E, then I wouldn't have sent these back. But like so many other products, a penny (or two) saved = higher profits and lower quality. Also interesting is that absolutely no small cardboard description of the product or even mention of a warranty was provided. Here we have forensic proof of the skeletal capitalism that serves as the prevailing standard. No thanks. These stylish Chukka boots are almost perfect for those with wide feet. I ordered the 11.5 6E shoe to give my 4E width feet some extra breathing room. The width of these shoes is spot on perfect - they feel fantastic. When it comes to the 11.5 size - these shoes feel more like a 12. I do not plan to return these - they fit fine - but may order a 11 6E next time.Pros: Look great with jeans or dress pants, very comfortable width, medium arch support (I added more with an insert), water proof and great traction.Cons: Fit great on width, but about 1/2 size larger on length.Overall I find these comfortable and a great replacement for my previous "dressy" black shoes. I also ordered black silicon no-tie laces to help make them even easier to get on and off - making these a near perfect shoe for those of us with wide feet.So far so good requires a bit of break in. But construction seams good. I wear everyday for work and do lots of standing and walking. So far pretty comfy. 4 stars because of break in, but been a week and getting better. Used mink oil to try to soften up and speed up process. No blisters just sore spots mainly top of feet and around ankle area. But once fully broke in I think they will be really good.Although too high priced,They would have been approximately half that if I had taken out a credit card offer,I am still pleased with them. The witdth is as advertised and they seem to offer the support expected. They were tight in the instep at first ,but a few days wearing them in the house and they loosened up.All in all I am very satisfied so far.Four star rating only because of the price. Not easy to find a definitely-stated-in-the-description width 4E (chukka) boot using the limited capabilities of Amazon search filtering. So this was a nice discovery. They are good quality (4.5 stars). I just don't like the shoe laces as they easily come untied. I replaced them with shorter ones. I added insoles to them as a matter of practice before wearing. Those looking for shoes described in 'E' width terms should, if Amazon doesn't specify it, check the actual brand web site and look first at THEIR size documentation. If necessary email their support and ask what 'wide' and 'extra wide' terms they use mean in 'E' terms. XW meant '3E' for my Wolverine boots and '5E' for my Skechers boots. The brown W Rockford chukka boots I bought on Amazon are '3E', I believe.
